Orthotics

At SPOC, we treat both Orthotic and Prosthetic patients. We treat each patient with the care and compassion needed to help achieve everyone’s goals. Children especially need compassionate care and patience that only a practice like SPOC can provide. We are not governed by the bottom line. We have no stockholders looking for a profit. All decisions are made locally by people who care about their patients.

  • Adult Orthotics

Orthotics (the technical name for a whole range of “braces.”) are commonly prescribed for people who have difficulty using their arms or legs or to modify the structural characteristics of the neuromuscular and skeletal system. Orthotics are devices used to manage or enhance the use of part of your body and provide comfort and healing by reducing shock, and decrease inflammation and swelling.

Torso and Upper Limb Orthotics

Upper-limb (or upper extremity) orthotics are mechanical or electromechanical devices applied externally to the arm or torso in order to restore or improve function, or structural characteristics encumbered by the device. In general, musculoskeletal problems that may be alleviated by the use of upper limb and torso orthotics include those resulting from trauma or disease (arthritis for example). They may also be beneficial in aiding individuals who have suffered a neurological impairment such as stroke, spinal cord injury, or peripheral neuropathy.

Lower Limb Orthotics

A lower-limb orthotics is an external device applied to a lower-body segment to improve function by controlling motion, providing support through stabilizing gait, reducing pain through transferring load to another area, correcting flexible deformities, and preventing progression of fixed deformities.

Adult Orthotics

For Children, the correct application of an orthotic at the proper moment in their development can have life-long positive effects. In general, orthotics:

  • Control, guide, limit and/or immobilize an extremity, joint or body segment for a particular reason

  • Reduce weight bearing forces for a particular purpose

  • Restrict movement in a given direction

  • Assist movement generally

  • Otherwise correct the shape and/or function of the body, to provide easier movement capability or reduce pain

In growing children and teens, fitting orthotics and prosthetics is especially important. Our team of experts supports your family through every stage of the process. We meet with you to assess your child’s needs and goals, take careful measurements to ensure proper fit, fit your child’s device, and follow up with you to make sure the device functions well as your child grows.
