Navigating the Journey: Crafting Personalized Prosthetics at Syracuse Prosthetic Orthotic Center

Understanding the Preparatory Prosthesis:

To ensure your transition to a prosthesis is seamless, we take a gradual approach at Syracuse Prosthetic Orthotic Center. We believe in helping your leg adapt to the prosthesis, ensuring the best possible fit for the long term. You'll gradually increase the time you wear your prosthesis each day, bearing weight on it as you become more accustomed to this transformative device.

We want you to build confidence and trust in the device, so we design the preparatory prosthesis to be lightweight, stable and safe.

We work closely with you and your therapists and doctors, ensuring that the preparatory prosthesis aligns with your goals for ambulation. The goal-setting process is collaborative, with your input playing a crucial role in determining a reasonable and achievable level of ambulation. Whether it's achieving full, weight-bearing ambulation or using assistive devices like a walker, cane, or crutches, our aim is to support your unique needs.

The Prosthetic Journey:

1. Needs Assessment and Evaluation:

  •   Initial discussions at Syracuse Prosthetic Orthotic Center to understand your individual needs.

  •   A detailed review of your medical history and evaluation of your current physical condition.

  •   What are your goals?

  •   What are some of your favorite things to do?

2. Exploring Prosthetic Options:

  •   Your prosthetist and our team explain various prosthetic options tailored to your specific circumstances.

  •   Do you perform activities that would expose your prosthesis to water?

  •   Are you often encountering uneven terrain, hills, ramps and slopes?

  •   Are you involved in any recreational activities?

3. Prosthetic Planning:

  •   Collaborative development of a prosthetic plan based on your goals.

  •   Coordination of services with therapists and doctors, emphasizing a personalized approach.

4. Detailed Examination and Measurement:

  • Your prosthetist conducts a precise examination of your residual limb, considering unique factors such as tissue density, scarring, and bone structure.

  • Precise measurements are taken, accompanied by the creation of a plaster duplicate of your limb.

  • We utilize hand casting, digital scanning and CAD/CAM technologies

5. Creation of Mold and Cast:

  •  Crafting a mold of your limb, followed by modifications to ensure a perfect fit.

  •  In-house creation of the custom socket, bearing in mind weight distribution and pressure points.

6. Socket Fabrication:

  •  Crafting each socket with care, recognizing the expertise of our in-house prosthetists.

  • Ordering external components as needed, ensuring a holistic and personalized approach.

  • We are one of the few facilities that has on-site fabrication and the equipment to perform necessary modifications in our office.

7. Check Socket Iterations:

  •  Fabricating and modifying a "check" socket for dynamic, real-life fitting situations.

  • Iterative checks and adjustments to achieve the best possible fit, with your prosthetist overseeing the process.

8. Permanent Prosthesis Assembly:

  •  Assembling and fitting the permanent prosthesis, paying attention to your comfort and feedback.

  • A trial fitting at home ensures any potential issues are identified and addressed promptly.

9. Refinement and Ongoing Support:

  • Continuous support and refinement as needed, with periodic follow-ups to ensure optimal performance.

  •  Personalized adjustments made on-site, reflecting our commitment to your journey.
